A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in public works. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in complete adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
