At least 35,000 individuals might be affected, warns the American embassy

A substantial security compromise in the Somali e-visa platform could have revealed sensitive details belonging to tens of thousands of applicants, comprising US citizens, the United States diplomatic mission in Somalia has warned.

The embassy reported gathered trustworthy accounts that "unidentified hackers" compromised the Mogadishu administration's digital visa application portal, possibly exposing details concerning at least 35,000 people.

The compromised files distributed through digital channels comprise names, photographs, dates of birth, marriage information, residential locations and electronic mail addresses, according to a US embassy statement released on last Thursday.

"This information compromise continues to occur and potentially disclose all private information provided to the system," the UK has also warned travelers.

"Consider the risks prior to requesting an e-visa mandatory for visiting the Somali nation."

Official Reaction

Somali authorities have not issued statements about the security compromise. But the government has moved its visa service from the initial application portal toward etas.gov.so, without issuing a formal statement.

"While American diplomatic mission in Somalia lacks the capacity to validate whether applicant details is part of the compromise, people who have submitted applications via the digital application platform could be impacted," the official communication stated.

Regional Implications

The updated visa process necessitates each person traveling, comprising individuals from the autonomous region of the breakaway region and the partially independent area of Puntland, to apply for admission permits online.

Critics say travellers have faced supplementary costs in specific areas, equivalent to double charges.

Political Context

The self-declared republic, which declared independence in 1991, administers its affairs through independent structures yet hasn't received worldwide acceptance. Somalia maintains that the region remains part of its jurisdictional area.

The claimed security incident exacerbates persistent conflicts concerning central government and Somaliland administration concerning jurisdiction of aviation space. Even though Mogadishu regained total jurisdiction of territorial skies in recent years, Somaliland regularly disputes the arrangement.

Current Developments

The dispute intensified recently after Somaliland's President the Somaliland president announced Somaliland would not accept Somalia's e-visa and instructed that airlines must obtain authorization from Hargeisa prior to accessing its airspace.

However prominent aviation companies have refused to process individuals without federal visa authorization.

On Saturday, Hargeisa's international relations official the foreign minister reaffirmed that "anyone travelling to the breakaway region should receive travel authorization at the point of entry", stating the federal electronic visa platform posed risks and warning that "personal information could be accessed by extremist organizations" due to utilizing the system.

Aviation Challenges

The stand-off has caused numerous passengers heading to Hargeisa stuck in transit hubs after being denied boarding due to absence of Mogadishu's digital permit.

Somaliland's Civil Aviation Minister, the transport official, has told media outlets that the regulations - initially declared previously - were implemented on the tenth of November.

He said companies that ignore will be told to reroute, and asserted multiple planes had already been rerouted.

Jurisdictional Battle

Recorded material distributed by Somaliland's aviation ministry reportedly displays local air-traffic controllers providing guidance to foreign aircraft commanders - an action hailed internally as a confirmation of Somaliland's autonomy.

However Mogadishu's air transport department insists it maintains exclusive regulatory authority concerning the federal aviation control area (aviation control zone), encompassing the entire country's aviation space. Authorities have instructed every plane to ignore all directives provided by sources besides central government.

Authorities alerted that not adhering to federal and global flight regulations could pose aviation dangers and cause "significant legal repercussions".
